Pictr.us is a photo-sharing app that required no user logins, accounts or installs. Show up at an event and text your photos to a MMS number that the organizer leased. In real-time, photos could be received, commented on and promoted within a mobile browser across a number of mobile phones and devices. Billed as an alternative to Facebook’s image sharing, Pictr.Us made it’s public splash at the Compost Modern 11 conference in San Francisco, receiving ~200 photos from the 2000 attendees – a great rate of participation.
Pictr.Us was built on a webkit front-end platform using HTML5 / CSS3 to deliver a compelling native-app like experience. The backend used socket.io and node.js hosted on heroku to handle the real-time connections of user generated content.
