I had the opportunity to host another great IXDAsf event this week, with Abi Jones, Christian Crumlish and Paul McAleer in town for their SXSW talk of TabletFirst Design. A group of about 50 of us were graciously hosted by Cooper, who were showing off their swanky new offices downtown, and we were in for a treat.
The three panelists each brought their own unique perspective on client engagement on tablet design, stating important methodology steps such as start with a mobile design, then work your way up to a tablet from there. Never ask the user to pinch and zoom. Hoverstates are bad, mmmkay. While some of these seem obvious, there were some further suggestions not to insult the user’s attention span by doing a feature tour that uses callouts and pop-ups. Instead, take some sort of understanding of what the user is looking for at a given time, and subtly suggest the next logical feature. Good ideas from some of the best designers in the business.
We look forward to hosting many more of these types of events in the future, and thank the volunteers and the attendees that helped make it a success.
